    Overview of heat treatment
    • Heat treatment creates metal/alloy products with desired mechanical properties and properties by three main factors. These three factors are performed sequentially and with different indexes and times, forming materials with different properties, namely:

    – Temperature

    – Heat retention time

    – Material cooling

    • Heat treatment of materials is accomplished by heating a metal or alloy to a standard temperature and ensuring that the material does not liquefy. Then, maintain that temperature level for a period of time (the length of time to maintain the temperature depends on the material’s mechanical properties). Finally, proceed to cool the material. As a result, the starting materials undergo chemical composition changes.
    • The heat treatment method helps to increase the advantages of hardness, prolong the service life, and improve the durability and wear resistance of the material. Heat treatment can fully harden and can also increase surface hardness. But still retain the inner toughness of the material.

There are four heat treatment methods that 83MEC applies to the machining process: annealing, normalizing, quenching, and tempering and two combined heat treatment methods: chemical heat treatment and mechanical heat treatment.

    Process

    Aim

    Annealing

    • Heating the material to a specific temperature.
    • Maintain temperature for a while (on request).
    • Cool down, slow speed < 200 degrees/hour.
    • Reduced hardness.
    • Increase ductility.
    • Serving for cutting, pressure processing, casting, welding, and balancing steel concentration.

    Normalizing

    • The metal is heated to 40° C above its upper critical temperature during this process.
    • This temperature is higher than the one used for hardening or annealing.
    • After holding it at this temperature for a designated time, it is cooled in air.
    • Normalising creates a uniform grain size and composition throughout the part.
    • Normalised steels are more rigid and stronger than annealed steel.
    • For hardness suitable for machining requirements (cutting machining).
    • The normalization method eliminates the stress present in the steel.
    • Minimizing the xementite sets the stage for the final heat treatment.
    Quenching
    • Heating the steel above the limit temperature.
    • The process of keeping heat is thanks to the appearance of austenitic organization.
    • Fast cooling.
    • Increase hardness.
    • Increased corrosion resistance.

    Tempering

    • Heating tempered steel below critical temperatures.
    • Maintain temperature for a certain period of time.
    • Cool.
    • Reduce or eliminate residual stress in steel.
